What are the health risks of fluoridated drinking water? - New research

Posted by

Recently fluoridated water has been suggested to be added to the Nelson water supply and possibly to the Christchurch supply .. no decisions have been made. The resistance by many residents is strong, though equally the proponents of the opinion that fluoride is good to protect our teeth and gums.

What are the risks of fluoridated drinking water?
Ben Warren, one of the leading NZ nutritionists comments on the issue:

Ben Warren

"Clinically I have witnessed the profound effects on weight loss in groups of populations drinking either fluoridated water or non-fluoridated.

The Fluoridated group found it much harder to lose weight than the non-fluoridated group.

Fluoride, being higher in the periodic table than iodine, blocks the role of iodine in the body.

There are 72 known pathways which iodine work. The mostly likely reason for the difference in weight loss would be the fluoride blocking the absorption of iodine in the thyroid resulting in lower levels of circulating T4 (Thyroxine).

This effect has never been studied and it is my opinion that the Ministry of Health should study the systemic effects of fluoride before administering it on the general public.

Until this and other areas have been studied I highly recommend you try to avoid the consumption of fluoridated water."

Where is fluoridated tap water in the North Island?

Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Gisborne, Taupo ... and many other places have fluoride in the tap water. What about your location ?

Fluoridation of water supply in NZ

Fluoride has been added to many water supplies in New Zealand over the years. More than 50% of the public water supply is fluoridated. Only few countries in the world are still fluoridating the water.
The issue is very controversial.
The reasons given by the NZ government for adding fluoride into the water are about improving dental health. Opponents of mass fluoridation argue that mass medicating the water is not acceptable as it forces large parts of the population to drink medicated water against their will and that it is fraught with health risks and that there are better ways to address dental decay issues.

the Against and Pro-camps have been heated.

Here is a newly released side-effect list from the EPA - Environmental Protection Agency USA - that really hits home:

Fluorisis is a condition of being over-fluoridated. Many think that fluoride only has side effects if you consume too much of it but this is wrong. Fluoride can cause arthritic symptoms and bone fractures well before the onset of fluorosis. It can also damage your brain and thyroid gland.

Here is a list of some of the other side effects of consuming fluoride:

* Bone fractures

* Brain effects including lower IQ

*Endocrine Disruption

*Gastrointestinal Effects

*Kidney Disease

*Decrease in Male Fertility

*Disruption of Pineal Gland

*Skeletal Fluorosis

*Thyroid Disease

*Acute Toxicity

The Discussion .. or more precise .. the Argument:

A significant part of the population argue that this is not the way to address dental health ...

... and that there are far better ways to do that without the health risks associated with fluoridated water. One of such ways is the successful Scottish CHILDSMILE programme which has been a great success by educating children and adults. Education is based on awareness of how to floss and how to look after teeth and gum. This also includes education about diet, about acidity in foods and how this affects the gums. E.g sugar is very acidifying and causes gum disease. Similarly acidic are carbohydrates as they build sugar. Scotland has found that avoiding sugary drinks and sweets in schools makes a huge difference.
Lowering the IQ ...
There have been several research studies done.

Today it is proven that fluoride lowers the IQ. It numbs the brain to some degree.

Of great concern are the risks and consequences of fluoride occupying the receptors in the body where absorption of iodine normally would take place.
This means that the body can only absorb limited amounts of iodine. This is quite a crucial issue as iodine is majorly important for day to day functioning of the body.
Consequences of decreased iodine absorption are known for thyroid issues.
Dr Paul Connett: 'It is notable that hypo thyroid issues
are prevalent in cities with fluoridated water.
Iodine is also very important for women's breast health.'
Is there a correlation between a big increase of breast cancer and fluoridated water ?
A lack of iodine uptake is not only an issue for women, it is also important for men and for children. In the American journal of public health it says: ' This has huge implications since low iodine is associated with mental retardation. Some estimates suggest that nearly 20 million infants may be at risk for brain damage or mental retardation due to low iodine during the mother’s pregnancy' [Source: Hetzel].
This plays out even more seriously for babies and infants as the dose of fluoride in drinking water per body weight is proportionally much higher !
There are other researches that point to other wider spread consequences:
Immune System weakness: Most people focus on the thyroid gland implications of iodine, but it has other functions, including being a major booster of the immune system.
The lack of iodine will weaken the immune system
Overweight and obesity is linked to a lack of iodine. Iodine is an essential trace element that is vital for normal growth and development. Around 60% of the iodine in the human body is stored in the thyroid gland. Its health benefits play a very important role in the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, which secretes thyroid hormones that control the base metabolic rate of the body. This has a significant influence on the metabolic processes in the body. It helps in the optimal utilization of calories, thereby preventing its storage as excess fat.
Iodine is also important for the removal of toxins from the body and assistance for the system in utilizing various minerals, like calcium and silicon. It also has great significance for our mental health.

Deficiency Symptoms of Iodine. A deficiency of iodine can have serious effects on the body. The symptoms of its deficiency include frustration, depression, mental retardation, poor perception levels, goiter, abnormal weight gain, decreased fertility, coarse skin, chances of still birth in expectant mothers, constipation and fatigue.

Iodine is required to ensure proper development and metabolism in humans.
Metabolic Rate: Iodine influences the functioning of thyroid glands by assisting in the production of hormones, which are directly responsible for controlling the body’s base metabolic rate. Metabolic rate affects the efficiency and efficacy of many of the body’s organ system and regular processes, including absorption of food, sleep cycles, and the transformation of food into usable energy.

Certain hormones, like thyroxin and triodothyronine, influence heart rate, blood pressure, body weight and temperature. The body maintains the BMR (Basic Metabolic Rate) with the help of these hormones, which also helps in protein synthesis. Ensuring their normal creation and distribution in the body is key to maintaining health, so maintaining the thyroid gland which they come from is essential.
Energy Levels: Iodine also plays an important role in maintaining optimal energy levels of the body by ensuring the efficient utilization of calories, without allowing them to be deposited as excess fats.
Hypothyroidism: This condition is characterized by an under-active thyroid gland, and results in the general slowing down of all bodily processes as the chemical balance in your body goes off track. One of the most common results of hypothyroidism is a large increase in weight, because your body simply doesn’t burn off the calories of food and turn it into useful energy.
Cancer Prevention: Another important health benefit of iodine apart from its thyroidal influence is its anti-carcinogenic properties.

If you would like help with removing fluoride from your water supply, call us. We have researched fluoride removal a lot over the years and have been testing fluoride removal cartridges for their actual removal rate with an independent laboratory rather than just rely on the claims of the manufacturers. We have found that all but one filter cartridge that we tested did not fulfill the claims of 'up to 99%' fluoride removal. So in case you purchased or intend to purchase a fluoride filter we recommend to ask the supplier for an independent lab test done in NZ to verify the efficiency of removal.

The easiest way to remove fluoride from your tapwater is to add the Ionza FluorEX Max filter to your existing filter fountain in your kitchen.

The FluorEX max filter has fantastic removal rates and is the most natural media made out of carbon and calcium with nano technology. This media does not recontaminate the water like the Alumina-media Filters do.
